During that period, however, the Ring's influence on Bilbo began to tell. Gandalf never entertained that his Hobbit companion might've chanced upon Sauron's infamous Ring, and Bilbo took his prize back to The Shire where both remained for 60 years. Bilbo Baggins carried the One Ring throughout the rest of his quest, often taking advantage of its magic without realizing the hefty cost involved.
